The IDL Story | The
Gulf Story | Timeline

At GULF OIL Corporation Limited, we are more than
just a corporate entity - in fact we are a juxtapositional blend of diverse business areas such as industrial explosives, mining products, lubricants, speciality oils and chemicals, active pharma ingredients (bulk drugs) and pharma formulations.

The Industrial Explosives Division
The Industrial Explosives Division (erstwhile IDL Industries Limited) was the
first in India to manufacture various types of detonators
and slurry explosives for commercial use. IDL Industries Limited
set up its detonator factory in 1967 at Hyderabad, Andhra
Pradesh, India with technical assistance of internationally
famous Hungarian and Yugoslavian manufacturers.
Detonators manufactured by the Industrial Explosives Division are modelled after widely
used European detonators developed after careful and systematic
scientific research.
The Industrial Explosives Division manufactures detonators of different types, detonating
cords and other accessories. Today, the Industrial Explosives Division is the second largest
detonator manufacturer in the world.
When IDL decided to enter the explosive field, it was decided
not to manufacture NG based explosives but only slurry explosives,
a decision which was in line with the world trend. Accordingly
a plant was set up at Rourkela, Orissa with American collaboration
and production started in 1970. For historical reasons the
American collaboration terminated and IDL had to fall back
on its own research and development to formulate quickly,
various types of explosives. The factory at Rourkela incorporates
all the modern developments in the field of explosives and
manufactures a complete range of slurry explosives for use
in opencast mines, quarries, underground mines, tunnels and
other construction projects.
